Steve Schaffer is the lead archivist at the Milwaukee County Historical Society. Steve received his Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2008. During that time, he interned with the Milwaukee Archdiocesan Archives, and after graduation, was a volunteer at the Wauwatosa Historical Society, and Marquette University.

Steve began working at the Milwaukee County Historical Society as a volunteer, then was hired as archivist in 2014. His primary duties include assisting researchers, processing collections, managing interns and volunteers and buildings/property management. Steve has been instrumental in developing the Society’s social media program.

For the past 8 years, Steve has been the primary contact at MCHS for 'Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project' researchers, helping to facilitate research efforts to uncover lost LGBTQ history through locating photographs, articles and other items. He also helped guide us through the process to get formal Milwaukee County Landmark recognition for the Black Nite bar uprising eight years before Stonewall.

Steve joined the Advisory Panel of the Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project in November 2023.
