This Month in Wisconsin LGBT History: September 2007

35 years ago-- 1972-- Fox Valley gays organize to encourage a gay or semi-gay business to open in the area. Michelle's Club begins regular Revue shows, featuring Winnie Storm, Sandy Alexandra, Brandy Le, Allison Brooks and Misty. Three members of GPU appear on a panel to discuss homosexuality on WOKY radio.

30 years ago-- 1977-- Stephen Walther, an early member of Gay Peoples Union, and better known as founder and publisher of Astronomy magazine, dies of a brain tumor. (30 years later, Astronomy Magazine is still the preeminent magazine for astronomy.) GPU's VD Exam Center expands to 3 days a week (Tues, Wed. Thurs.), open from 8-11pm. (The VD Exam Center still exists as the BESTD Clinic.)

20 years ago-- 1987-- 2nd annual MAP Fest is held. OUT! newspaper ceases publication after 5 years, laying the groundwork for the beginnings of the Wisconsin Light newspaper. Wreck Room hosts a MASH party.

15 years ago-- 1992-- Vandals strike in Milwaukee, tossing bricks through the windows of several gay businesses: M&M Club, Wreck Room, In Step, and Miss M's Cafe; a few straight businesses were also vandalized. Queer Nation meets with United Way. Brewers star Paul Molitor chairs the 3rd annual AIDS Walk. ACT/UP- Madison drops condoms into Waupun prison yard.
